In An Absurdist Play Set On A Boat, our nameless protagonist wakes to find themselves on a ship, unsure of who they are or where they are going. As they seek out other people on the ship, they find that answers are not easy to come by as the captain of the ship has no idea where they are going either, and the few passengers on board don’t seem to care.
As an absurdist play, the piece has as much or as little in terms of a message as you want to take from it. Does the directionless of the ship and lack of empathy that affects everyone on board symbolise the distrust we place in the people who are meant to be guiding us? Most likely. But it is also possible that this is just a funny play that happens to be set on a boat.
